Hey All,
So I’m officially starting my first blog! Thanks for taking the time to read...hopefully you don’t think it’s completely a waste of time. Over the last week, I’ve reflected on different events that I was blessed to have. One such event was a simple conversation with our janitor. It wasn’t different from most afternoons; he’s truly a genuinely kind individual. This conversation made me think though...he stated that all humans have the ability to be smart in anything. The only difference is some have interests in different areas, and that’s what we specialize in. I have to be honest, at first I didn’t think much of the conversation...until we had our last staff meeting. Our staff meeting started the same as any other meeting. We discussed concerns that were occurring in our school. It wasn’t until the end of the meeting that we read an article (a little P.D. at 3:45PM never hurt anyone, right?) that had me thinking. The article we read was “What the Latest Neuroscience Research Says Every Educator Should Know About the Brain,” by Sarah Bosch (@smbosch for all you Twitter nuts). One of the main points was about brain plasticity. This means that our brains change from the brains that we are born with. In addition, we are capable of learning anything to the ability of others. Next came the cool part, I went back to that conversation and thought to myself...huh if only I would have listened differently I totally would have understood what our janitor was talking about. He was 100 percent right about our brains. It also made me reflect on how I need to realize and challenge students to succeed with concepts that we discuss in class because their brains are still developing. Moral of the story...every student can learn the concept, we just have to make it fun.
