“I wanna swing Daddy!” If I got a quarter for every time I've heard that this summer, I'd be a rich man. My middle child loves to swing always asking if I'll push her. This is a job that I will always cherish, no matter how tired or frustrated I may be. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of pushing 2 of my 3 children on our swing set. Amid the constant underdogs, pushes, and blast offs, my mind started to drift…this school year is going to be awesome, I'm so excited, I'm bummed that I won't see my wife and kids as much, how are we going to do it with 3 kids… The ideas continue to run through my mind never ending. Then a thought occurred… I'm going to treat this school year just like I push my children on the swing. Start out reaching for the sky, giving pushes and guidance along the way. For me, the beginning of the school year can be a bit tricky with a new group of students. Sometimes I struggle with expecting the incoming class to be at the same level as the outgoing class from the previous year. Kind of like I expect my children to pump their legs without ever being taught. I have to remind myself that hey this is a different group of children with different capabilities; it's my job to figure out what works best for all students, so they can learn to their best ability. Just like my own children learning to swing in their own way. I have to remind myself to be patient, eventually we all pump our legs. It’s important to have our students reach for the sky with their learning. I strive to teach my students to mastery and beyond. Of course, just like a swing ride, I will be there to help push all students, guide them along their educational journey, and help them get up when they fall down. With some guidance and a few pushes along the way, we figure out how to do “it”. Whatever ”it” may be. “It” could be pumping our legs, practicing our math facts, improving our reading comprehension, finding solutions to world problems, the list goes on. Isn't that what we want for our next generation…the ability to do ”it”?
