Those who can't, teach. We've all heard this expression before. It not, sorry to be the first to share this horrible notion. This expression came to my mind in my last grad school class. We were sitting in class watching a video on DVD. Old school right? Hard to believe we weren't streaming Netflix, TED Talks, or Hulu. It was a great presentation done by Jamie Robert Vollmer. He was speaking about how teacher responsibilities have changed over time. My jaw dropped when he showed a visual with all the responsibilities that teachers have today in our fast pace world. I attached the list in a pdf file to this blog post. I encourage you to spend a couple minutes skimming it; it may really surprise you. My intention of sharing this with you is not to complain about teacher responsibilities nor to put the teaching profession on a pedestal, rather to bring awareness of the awesome responsibilities we have as teachers. As educators, we get to mold what we want our future to look like, and that is great! My fear is that people are moving away from the teaching profession and ultimately we may begin to see a nation wide teacher shortage. My final thought is maybe we should encourage a future generation of teachers and change that awful quote…those who CARE teach. After all it's all about the kids!
