Throughout my youth, I was fascinated with baseball. I always wanted to watch it, read about it, and get better playing it. It was this intrinsic passion that helped drive me towards mastery. Now, my fascination has shifted to my career in education. With this stated, I have a few ideas about being a change agent in education, and striving for perfection... I started a new book, The Leadership Gap, by Lolly Daskal, after reading about half of it, I started to reflect. I need to start asking myself, what can I discover, not necessarily what can I change. Discover the process, become familiar with it. Change what doesn't work and learn from the failures. It's important to collaborate with others to help me discover my ineptitude. It's even more important to work with others who don't share the same viewpoint. These individuals may show a viewpoint I've never thought of before. Regardless of who I'm working with collaboration is key to success. One of the most important parts of collaboration is listening. I'm being a bit of a hypocrite here because this is hard for me, if you don't believe me ask my wife…Listening to others is key. If I have something to say instead of interrupting, I'm going to try to write it down to come back to it later. The path to discovery takes courage. Having courage to explore something new is essential. Without exploration and change, nothing can improve. At this point, you might be thinking about the old saying, if it isn't broke why fix it? Although this may be true about basic plumbing and electrical work, I don't know if it holds much merit elsewhere. However, I'm not saying to change everything. The path towards discovery will take time, but I don't want to ever look back and say to myself what if...
