Unbelievable. It’s a term people use all the time; a common synonym of it is extraordinary.
This winter I heard and used this term an incredible amount of times, especially after every snow storm. There was one particular snow storm that was a doozy. It was the snowstorm that dropped about a foot of snow and had blizzard like conditions (try to find my mailbox in the picture--it’s crazy). Something happened to me during this storm that has never happened before, I started to feel anxious as if it was never going to stop. My heart started beating faster, and my head was spinning with “what ifs.” It took our city another couple of days before the snow mess was cleaned up. Unbelievable. On my day off I couldn’t help but think about the students that I see on a daily basis. What were they doing? Were they reading? Were they playing video games? Were they at home with mom and/or dad? Then I really started thinking, were they getting enough food to eat? Did they get adequate sleep? Is mom or dad there to make sure they are safe and warm? I am so grateful for this anxiety that I experienced. Without it, I wouldn’t have had these thoughts. It allowed me to think about the important things in life like my students basic needs. It slowed me down and forced me to reevaluate the real reason why I do my job everyday. The next time I open my grade book, instead of looking at the grades or missing assignments first, I’m going to reflect and consider the student outside of academics as well. Because not having a meal or a warm, safe place to be during the day is truly unbelievable.
