BecomingHey All,
I decided to read Becoming, Michelle Obama's autobiography. I heard a lot of good things about this book from various people in my life. I'm not reading the book based on political beliefs or otherwise. I'm purely reading it for enjoyment and based on recommendation. I am a non-fiction junky and especially enjoy reading biographies, so this book fit the "mold" for me. I wasn't even 2 chapters in when I began to read about the role education has in her life. Within this chapter, she describes a scenario in which she encounters competition in her second grade classroom. It was a competition in which students had to stand up and read words in front of the class. She goes on to discuss the anxiety and fear she had when she was asked to read the word "white" in front of everyone. "...I froze altogether, my throat instantly dry, my mouth awkward and unable to shape the sound as my brain glitched madly…(Obama, 2018, p. 86)" I think we can all relate to the scenario above. We've probably all had an experience in which we felt anxious or fear when asked to do something. I took away a few things from reading this:
After reflecting about this section, it really brings to mind my own instruction. Maybe I should do things a little differently to improve and to see success among my students. Obama, Michelle. Becoming. Random House USA, 2018.
